Hyundai India has recently launched its most affordable Compact SUV, the EXTER with an Introductory Price of Rs. 5.99 Lakh (Ex-Showroom). In the Compact SUV segment, the Exter will compete against the likes of Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and Maruti Ignis.

The Hyundai Exter is not the largest vehicle in the compact SUV segment measuring 3815mm in Length, 1710mm in Width, 1631mm in height and with a Wheel Base of 2450 mm. From the table above, its is clear that Exter is smallest among its competitors except Maruti Ignis. The only area where Exter exceeds is its Boot Space and Ground Clearance.

In the competition, the Citroen C3 is the longest and widest Subcompact SUV, measuring 3,981mm in Length, 1,733mm in Width and has the longest wheelbase at 2,540mm. The Tata Punch has the highest ground clearance of all four, at 187mm with the Maruti Suzuki Ignis being the smallest one in almost all the Dimensions. The Tata Punch hereby scores in the Tyre Size availability with an option of 16” Wheels.

In Engine options, all the Compact SUVs are available with a 1.2 litre Naturally Aspirated Engines whereby the Exter and the Ignis gets 4 Cylinder units and the Tata Punch and Citroen C3 gets 3 Cylinder Units. The Turbo Petrol option is only available with the Citroen C3 producing a peak Power of 110 hp and a peak Torque of 113 Nm. The Citroen C3 thus being the most powerful of the all.

The Exter makes the least power among all with a 1197 CC 4 Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engine producing 83 hp and 114 Nm of Torque. Most of the above Sub Compact SUVs have an option of an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) along with a 5 Speed Manual Transmission excluding the Citroen C3, which do not have an Automatic option but scores more in having a 6 Speed Manual Transmission in the Turbo Petrol variant.

The Hyundai Exter is the only Sub Compact SUV available with a factory fitted CNG option which the others do not offer till now. The Exter CNG is only available with a 5 Speed manual transmission with Peak Power standing at 69 hp and Peak Torque at 95 Nm.

Mileage is the only area where Maruti Ignis scores over its Competition here with Claimed Mileage of 20.89 Kmpl for both the Manual and the Automatic variants. The Citroen C3 stands at the bottom of all with Claimed Mileage of 19.4 Kmpl for NA Petrol and 19.3 Kmpl for the Turbo Petrol.

In the Automatic Versions, Tata Punch sits at the bottom with a Claimed Mileage of only 18.8 Kmpl.

Further, in the Top spec trim Prices, the Maruti Ignis is the least expensive amongst all with Price starting at Rs. 8.16 lakh and the Hyundai Exter being the most expensive of the lot with the Top spec variant Priced at Rs. 10.00 Lakh.
