Mahindra is in the midst of redefining itself, and a brand-new style sheet is a part of that. Mahindra’s future Electric Vehicle range including Mahindra BE and XUV.e have already shown us the way, and now the Thar, in its all-electric avatar, is moving in a completely new direction. It is obvious that the Thar.e concept completely eliminates the older CJ-related design elements and differs significantly from its ICE ancestors. Because it is a born Electric Vehicle, there is no need for a Ladder-Frame Chassis, and Mahindra this time around has chosen the 5 Door model.
Mahindra Thar Electric : Design
The Thar.e concept appears to have a lot of Ground Clearance and Wheel Travel, thanks, to its elevated Baja-type Suspension. It has the appearance of a serious off-roader thanks to its Upright Shape, Boxy Size, and particularly its Squared-off Fenders. ‘Flat’ panels, some with corrugations and exposed door hinges, make up the surface.
The Thar.e’s new front-end features two Headlamp Units that are Quartered and Squared, a Grille that is rectangular with three LED “Slat” elements on one side, and a large, Bulky Front Bumper to finish the look. The Land Rover and the first Land Cruisers both had similar stylistic elements.
To make the design appear smaller, the rear portion has been blacked out. Additionally, the wide tack with the wheels outside the main body line is plainly seen from this vantage point.
The Thar.e concept’s interior features a Flat Dashboard with Grab Handles at either end. A Flat 3 Spoke Steering Wheel, a Touchscreen in the center, and a prominent Central Tunnel assist to complete the simple but robust appearance. Unlike its INGLO stablemates, the Electric Thar does not have wall-to-wall Touchscreens, but it does have a Fighter Aircraft type live “Status” Pictogram on the Instrument Panel.
Mahindra Thar Electric : Battery Pack and Range
The Thar Electric will utilize a modified version of Mahindra’s new INGLO dedicated EV Platform, also known as the P1, rather than being constructed on a Ladder-Frame Chassis like the existing Thar. The INGLO (India Global) platform uses what is known as a SkateBoard Platform, with a Flat Battery slung between the Wheels. The same platform will also supports five other brand-new Electric SUVs in future.
The Length, Wheelbase, and Height of this chassis are all Adjustable and Modular. The conventional INGLO platform’s Wheelbase can be adjusted by 130mm, while the P1, which the Thar.e will be constructed on, is expected to have a Wheelbase ranging from 2775mm to 2975mm. A recently released diagram shows that the extra length is added between the firewall and the front wheel hub.
For previous versions like the XUV.e8, Mahindra will initially acquire its INGLO batteries and Motor from BYD-China, but the Thar.e is anticipated to employ more potent Motors produced from Volkswagen-Germany. For the Front and Rear Axles, respectively, will produce 80KW and 210KW respectively, but this power output could vary. Additionally, with 135Nm and 535Nm of Torque arriving at Idle Speed, a low-range transfer case might not be necessary.
Mahindra Thar Electric : Expected Launch and Price
In the world of automobiles, Mahindra has been making waves with its ambitious launch calendar that stretches all the way to October 2026. However, amidst the anticipation for their upcoming models, the production version of the much-awaited Thar.e is likely to keep enthusiasts waiting a little longer, and it comes with a hefty price tag starting from Rs 18 lakh – Rs. 20 lakh.
