In a significant move towards greener mobility, Toyota Bharat, today, unveiled the Innova Hycross with a revolutionary Flex Fuel Hybrid Powertrain in India. This groundbreaking vehicle was officially unveiled by Union Ministers Mr. Nitin Gadkari and Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri. With plans for a potential launch in the upcoming months, the Toyota Innova Hycross Flex Fuel Hybrid will mark Toyota’s inaugural venture into offering a Flex Fuel Powertrain option in the Indian market. This remarkable achievement has been dubbed as the World’s first BS6 Stage II compliant Flex Fuel Vehicle, underscoring Toyota’s commitment to both Innovation and Environmental responsibility.

This introduction is not Toyota Motor Corporation’s first foray into Flex Fuel vehicles on the Indian stage. Just a few months back, the company presented a Corolla Flex Fuel Hybrid Sedan as part of a pilot project aimed at assessing the feasibility and performance of Flex Fuel-powered cars in India.

Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid Flex Fuel: Powertrain

The Innova Hycross Flex Fuel Prototype showcases a powertrain based on a 2.0 liter Atkinson Cycle Petrol Engine, seamlessly integrated with a Strong Hybrid System, similar to the standard Innova Hycross Hybrid model. An exemplary feature of this innovation is its compatibility with Ethanol-blended Petrol, a characteristic that Toyota emphasizes can significantly reduce Hydrocarbon Emissions, contributing to cleaner air quality.

What sets this prototype apart is its adherence to the stringent BS6 Phase II Emission Standards. It is engineered to function seamlessly on Petrol blended with Ethanol content exceeding 20 percent. This robust Hybrid System operates in Electric Vehicle (EV) mode for 60 percent of its runtime, with the remaining 40 percent powered by the Ethanol enhanced Petrol Engine. This configuration results in remarkably low emissions.

Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid Flex Fuel: Technical Changes

In order to optimize performance when running on Ethanol, Toyota has made several crucial modifications to the vehicle’s internal components. These include Specialized Spark Plugs, Piston Ring tops and Corrosion resistant Valve and Valve Seats for the 2.0 liter Strong Hybrid Engine. Furthermore, the company has introduced a three way Catalyst into the Exhaust System, an innovation aimed at further reducing Hydrocarbon Emissions. 

Recognizing the unique demands of Ethanol as a Fuel source, Toyota has also made the Fuel Filter, Fuel Pump and Fuel lines compatible to this eco-friendly alternative. The incorporation of an Ethanol Sensor in the Fuel Lines contributes to seamless Performance and Operational efficiency.

At present, Toyota is dedicated to conducting rigorous testing on multiple units of the Innova Hycross Hybrid Flex Fuel prototype within the Indian market. While an official launch date and pricing details are yet to be revealed, this pivotal move exemplifies Toyota’s progressive outlook towards sustainable Driving Solutions and Green mobility in India.

Toyota’s foray into Flex Fuel Hybrids comes at a time when the Automotive Industry is experiencing a paradigm shift towards Environment friendly Mobility options.
